Raised on a small farm near Selkirk, Manitoba, I grew up close to nature. I was always able to draw and sketch. I started woodcarving at age 50 as I was newly retired. I already had a custom leatherwork and cabinet making business in Alberta. I was spurred to join Chinook Wildfowl Carvers by two friends. There, everyone was carving beautiful ducks and other birds. They provided valuable information and knowledge. They asked me what I was carving and I said "a painted turtle (Terrapin)"; they all chuckled until it was finished. I love the challenge of carving all kinds of birds, whales, and animals. A lot of woodcarvers have quit because they say "there's no money in it", but I just love creating and carving. It is relaxing and fulfilling. Now, that I live in Sayward, B.C. (northern Vancouver Island) 1.2 km from the Johnstone Strait I have lots of natural inspiration.
